Your options when Mounjaro is not enough
Has the medication stopped working?
Should you increase the dose? Should you change to something else? What happens next?
Here's what we tell patients
This is completely normal. This pattern happens to nearly everyone on Mounjaro. Mounjaro is an incredibly effective medication, but your body adapts. The receptors are down-regulated. This is expected, not exceptional.
And most importantly: you're not stuck.
This is where having a clear exit pathway matters.
book a consultationWhy This Happens (Biology, Not Failure)
Mounjaro typically delivers 15-20% body
weight loss over 12-18 months.

Patients that's enough
For some patients, that's enough. You hit your goal weight.Mission accomplished.
This isn't failure. This is normal.
Who need more?
-
For others, it's only halfway there. You started at 120kg, you're now at 96kg (20% loss), but you need to reach 80kg. That leaves 16kg unaddressed.

The medication has done its job. It's brought you part of the way. But it's reached its biological limit for your
5 Signs Mounjaro Has Stopped Working
-
No weight loss for 3+ consecutive months
You’re taking your injections regularly, following your diet, but the scale won’t budge. This is the clearest sign of plateau. -
Hunger is return ing
Remember when Mounjaro first killed your appetite completely? Now you’re thinking about food again. Cravings are back. The “food noise” you forgot existed has returned. -
Previous portions feel normal again
In Month 3, you could barely finish half a plate. Now you’re eating full meals without feeling uncomfortably full. -
Energy levels have dropped
Your metabolism has slowed to conserve energy. You feel more tired despite eating adequately. -
Early weight regain (3kg)
Some patients notice a few kilograms creeping back on, even while still taking Mounjaro regularly.
Your Options From Here
Option 1:Dose Optimisation
- If you’re not yet on maximum dose (15 mg), we can review whether increasing the dose might restart weight loss.
- However, if you’re already on 15 mg and plateaued for 3+ months, further dose increases won’t help. There’s no higher dose available.
Option 2:You’ve Reached Your Goal
If you’ve lost enough weight to achieve your health goals, we can discuss:
- Maintenance strategies
- Long-term monitoring
- How to sustain your results
Option3:You Need to Lose More Weight
If you’ve plateaued but still need additional weight loss, we can discuss:
-

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if Mounjaro has stopped working?
If you've been at the same weight for 3+ months despite being on Mounjaro and following the programme, it's likely plateaued.
Can I just increase my Mounjaro dose?
If you're already on maximum dose (15 mg), there is no higher dose available.
Should I switch to a different GLP-1 medication like Wegovy?
Switching from Mounjaro to Wegovy or other GLP-1s rarely produces additional weight loss once you've plateaued. They work through similar mechanisms.
What else can I do if Mounjaro doesn't work for me anymore?
"Mounjaro doesn't work" can mean different things:
If Mounjaro didn't deliver weight loss (lost only 2-3 kg in 6+ months): Some patients are
non-responders to GLP-1 medications. This is rare but happens. If minimal weight loss despite proper dosing and adherence, we can discuss procedural options (ESG, gastric sleeve) depending on your BMI and goals.
If you had severe side effects: Nausea, vomiting, or other intolerable side effects can make
Mounjaro unsuitable. If you couldn't tolerate the medication, we can explore non-medication options instead.
If Mounjaro worked but has now plateaued: This is the most common scenario (covered above). You've lost 15-20% body weight, now plateaued. We discuss whether you've reached
your goal or need additional intervention.
Your options:
• Maintain your current weight loss (if goals achieved)
• ESG (non-surgical option for additional weight loss)
• Gastric sleeve or bypass (if significant additional weight loss needed)
We help you decide which path makes sense for your situation.
What if I don't want any procedures?
That's fine. We can discuss maintenance strategies to help you sustain the weight you've already lost.
