What isMini-Gastric Bypass?

A mini-gastric bypass is a weight-loss procedure that involves making surgical changes to the stomach in order to reduce the release of hunger hormones. Patients will adopt a personalised diet and exercise programme once their mini-gastric bypass is performed. The combination of lifestyle modification and hunger-hormone reduction helps patients avoid overeating by creating a feeling of satiety. Less fat is absorbed when food is consumed, and fewer calories are absorbed.

Over two years, mini-gastric bypass patients can lose up to 80% of their excess weight. These results are superior to those achieved by gastric band weight reduction, gastric balloons, and weight-loss medications. This degree of weight loss can have a positive effect on weight-related health issues such as high cholesterol, sleep apnoea, and heart disease.

Ideal Candidates for Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery

Patients with a BMI of 40 or above may be excellent candidates for mini-gastric bypass surgery. Additionally, patients with a BMI between 30 and 40 can be good candidates, provided they are also experiencing weight-related comorbidities.
Candidates with certain weight-related health issues are especially ideal for this procedure. Patients with high blood pressure are likely to experience a reduction in their blood pressure after a mini-gastric bypass, and many candidates with Type 2 diabetes notice an almost-immediate change in their condition.

Patients who are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant within the next year must postpone their mini-gastric bypass. Patients with GERD must avoid undergoing the mini-gastric bypass procedure, since the surgery can exacerbate the symptoms of GERD. Past abdominal surgeries may limit candidacy for this procedure.

The Mini Gastric Bypass Consultation

To evaluate a patient’s candidacy for the mini-gastric bypass procedure, it will be necessary to arrange a personal consultation with Mr. Vasilikostas. This consultation will allow Mr. Vasilikostas to perform a physical examination. He will go over the patient’s medical history and their past experience with weight reduction. He will also enquire about their diet and lifestyle.

The patient will express their weight-loss goals and their feelings regarding the overall process. Mr. Vasilikostas will tell the patient about the details of weight reduction with a mini-gastric bypass, including preparation and recovery steps. Additionally, he will work with the patient to design their new healthy exercise and diet plan.

The Mini-Gastric Bypass Surgical Process

The mini-gastric bypass technique is also called the single anastomosis gastric bypass, the mini loop gastric bypass, and the omega loop gastric bypass (OLGB). Because it only requires a single anastomosis, the procedure requires less time to perform than a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, and its incidence of complications is lower. In certain instances, patients can achieve enhanced weight-loss results following the mini-gastric bypass.

Like the Roux-en-Y, a mini-gastric bypass is performed under general anaesthesia and involves creation of five very small incisions in the abdominal wall. Mr. Vasilikostas utilises the laparoscopic stapler tool to divide a smaller tube-shaped section of the stomach. An opening is created in the lower section of the new stomach, and then a section of the intestine is connected to this opening, forming an anastomosis.

Recovery and Healing Process

After 24 hours have passed, the patient will be cleared to return home to rest and recover. Patients will not be able to drive themselves home after their mini-gastric bypass, so it will be necessary to arrange for a ride home from a friend or family member.

The recovery and healing process is the same as that of a traditional gastric bypass procedure. During this period, patients must carefully and diligently follow the post-surgical care directions provided by Mr. Vasilikostas. This will ensure a comfortable recovery and a minimised chance of complications.

Patients may experience minor pain or discomfort at the incision sites, along with a degree of temporary swelling and bruising. Mr. Vasilikostas will discuss options for reduction of these issues.

A liquid diet must be adopted for around two weeks following mini-gastric bypass surgery. Patients will then transition to a pureed-food diet for one to two weeks. This is followed by a soft-food diet for one to two weeks before patients can return to solid foods in accordance with their new healthy diet.

Patients must take around one to two weeks off from work. Light exercises can be performed gradually over the course of recovery as directed by Mr. Vasilikostas. Physically taxing activities, however, must be avoided for a period of six weeks.

To avoid pregnancy during the healing process, patients must practise effective contraception for up to a year and a half after their mini-gastric bypass procedure.

Follow-up appointments with Mr. Vasilikostas will be necessary to ensure that the weight-reduction process is proceeding as expected. This will also allow him to screen for any potential complications.

Patients must undergo vitamin B12 injections quarterly and must also take vitamin and mineral supplements regularly. They must undergo blood tests every six to 12 months in order to ensure that their nutrient levels are not compromised. Nutrient deficiencies can result in a variety of health issues.
